Beer No.36 - Tesco Finest French Wheat Beer
What have I done to deserve this? 3 wheat beers in a row, oh lucky me! Someone, somewhere is laughing at me! This Whear beer (5%) is the French counterpart to the German and Belgium Whest beers tried previously. There's not much info available, I'm afraid. The beer is brewed by Brasserie Castelain, in Benifontaine, France, and is also known as Castelain ChTi Blanche. Can't find a website. The bottle says, "Traditional and unfiltered, Naturally Cloudy, Clean, crisp and fruity taste."

The Independent says, "This cloudy, unfiltered wheat beer is produced across the Channel according to a traditional Gallic technique. It has a crisp, fruity taste, with hints of summer flowers on the nose and a grainy note on the palate. Like all wheat beers, it makes a great alternative to wine at the dinner table, and the cork on this plus sized bottle means it will pop open with all the theatre of a vintage champagne."

I say; Well, out of the 3 in a row wheat beer, this is probable the one I like the most, due to the wheat being less overbearing. In fact, this beer is pretty light on taste all round, so it's not a compliment I am making. At best this is wet and watery, with a week ginger beer aftertaste. Am very surprised this has made the list, it seems light on everything. I think this has been the worst beer so far on the list.

Beer No. 35 - Franziskaner Weissbier

As before, I'm not a fan of wheat beers. Last time it was a belgium brew, this time it's a german effort (5.0%). The brewery says, "Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell is brewed in accordance with the German Purity Law. Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell is noted for its agreeable level of carbination and its natural cloudiness. It is brewed from wheat malt, barley malt, hops, top fermenting yeast and water according to a time honoured Bavarian recipe."

The Independent says, "Munich is a kind of mecca for beer-lovers and this wheat beer comes from one of the city's best old breweries. Fruity, with overtones of sweet honey, butterscotch, Chinese 5 spice and vanilla, Franziskaner drinks splendidly on its own, but makes an even better accompaniment to pudding."

I say; Well, it's a wheat beer, so I'm not really going to write pages on how I like it. I can pretty much choke it down, but it's an effort. This is more like the wheat beers I used to sample in Australia (no compliment meant there) and where the Independent says it's fruity, I taste banana. More wheaty than Hoegaarden, there will be alot of peolpe out there into this, but...

Beer No. 34 - Hoegaarden Biere Blanche
Ok, wheat beer, oh dear. Not a fan, but will try to be objective. This beer (4.9%) is quite a famous beer, from a country that knows a thing or two about beer. The brewery says, "The Original Belgian white beer. Unfiltered, naturally cloudy. A delicious and surprisingly refreshing taste. Brewed using a unique recipe."

The Independent says, "Forget Stella: Belgium's best mass market beer comes in the cloudy form of Hoegaarden, a classic white beer that owes its splendidly gingery, fereshing taste to the addition of ingredients like coriander and curacoa orange peels during the brewing process. Now owned by InBev, and therefore sold everywhere, it is supposed to be drunk in eight sided glasses, which apparently, can only be prised out of drinkers' hands with spanners at the end of the night."

I say; To me, it looks good, I'm definitely a fan of paler ales. First thing that stops me is the smell. It just smells wrong, stale almost. Tastewise, it has that tartness that I associate with wheat beer, there's no joy for me drinking this. There's not much I can enjoy here, sorry guys, lots of people like you, but I'm not one of them!

Beer No. 33 - Michelob Lager
I would imagine this US lager (5%) surprised a few people with its inclusion. The (vast Anheuser - Busch) brewery says, "A classic all malt lager brewed with noble european aroma hop varieties."

The Independent says, "So, you're in a noisy bar, and all they're serving is heavily advertised lager for mass market junkies. Don't worry: despite its big brand status, and the fact that it's brewed in the beer graveyard that is the US, Michelpb is actually an under-rated gem; malty, full bodied and full of character. Make sure you buy the imported version."

I say; A difficult beer to get hold of, this one. However it now looks like it has had a relaunch, as I have started seeing it more and more. Compared to many of the beers on this list, you really have to search for the flavour and body. Cold and wet dominates, and whilst there is a floralness there, I am one of the people who is surprised. Nothing wrong with this beer, it just isn't one of the top 50 to me

Beer No.32 - Brocket's Beer (Hepworth & Co.)
Beer, bangers and bacon. All part of Lord Brocket's range. Made by Hepworth, who say, "Brocket's beer is a best barley malt bitter which contains home grown Sussex Barley malt and hops to give a fresh bite balanced with a long silky finish. Long on flavour with a good hoppy nose my luxurious beer is brewed exclusively for me and Brocket Hall Foods - best enjoyed on its own or with food, and I'm talking the beer, not me!"

The Independent says, "Don't let the grinning aristocratic wally on the label put you off; the former jailbird Lord Brocket got Hepworth, a fantastic brewer from West Sussex, to create this signature bitter for his new range of own label food and drink. Our panel enjoyed the balance of malt and hops, and its clean silky finish."

I say; Had to get this direct from the Lord, and his bangers etc do look good! Pours well, beautiful colour, big on flavour. Well made, although very malty, which is not high on the list of my favourite things! Very bitter on the tongue, this beer does absolutely nothing wrong at all, yet I doubt I'll drink it again, to me, too much malt, not enough floral input!
